homepage.ntlworld.com/d.brittain2/random/simpsons.html

Test it here
(I know its hosted on ntl thats only becuase I know its reliable)

If you find any errors/spellings mistakes please let me know.

Thanks
Gavin

Is that supposed to be a bot service, as in the LWP::Simple::get kind? Because if so, it won't work.

LWP::Simple::get would return the page source, JavaScript and all:

Code:
<html><br /><br /><head><br /><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"><br /><meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0"><br /><meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document"><br /><title>Simpsons Random Stuff</title><br /></head><br /><br /><body><br /><script language="JavaScript"><br />// ==============================================<br />// Copyright 2004 by CodeLifter.com<br />// Free for all; but please leave in this header.<br />// ==============================================<br /><br />var Quotation=new Array() // do not change this!<br /><br />// Set up the quotations to be shown, below.<br />// To add more quotations, continue with the<br />// pattern, adding to the array.  Remember<br />// to increment the Quotation[x] index!<br /><br />Quotation[0] = "Only one character is drawn with five digits on each hand: God.";<br />Quotation[1] = "The longest Home has been seen without stubble is just seven seconds.";<br />Quotation[2] = "Lisa has celebrated her eight birthday on the show twice.";<br />Quotation[3] = "Pete Toenshend of The Who's cameo was actully recorded by his brother Paul.";<br />Quotation[4] = "The show hints that fictional Springfield could be set in New Jersey, Missouri or Kentucky.";<br />Quotation[5] = "Eric Stefani, brother of Gewn and ex-No Doubt keyboard player, left the band to become a Simpson's animator.";<br />Quotation[6] = "It takes eight months to make each episode.";<br />Quotation[7] = "Rev Lovejoy has three alarms in his pulpit to wake up his congregation: bird, ambulance and also disco whistle.";<br />Quotation[8] = "There's a sign in the Kwik-E-Mart saying it dose not accept cheques from Chief Wiggum, Reverend Lovejoy, Homer J Simpson, H J Simpson, Homer Simpson or Homer J Fong.";<br />Quotation[9] = "When Homer learns to box in the episode The Homer They Fall, he fights under the auspicious name of ASSBOX (Association of Springfield Semi-pro Boxers).";<br />Quotation[10] = "The team who make Itchy And Scratchy are drawn to look like The Simpson's real-life writers.";<br />Quotation[11] = "Maggie often spells out EMCSQ (or E=MC2) on her building blocks.";<br />Quotation[12] = "When Maggie goes through the checkout in the opening titles, she costs $847.63 - the amount it costs a month to raise a baby in the US, according to statistics.";<br />Quotation[13] = "Mayor Quimby is based on President John F Kennedy.";<br />Quotation[14] = "Bartender Moe is based on US comedian Rich Hall.";<br />Quotation[15] = "Maggie is based on Popeye's baby, Sweet Pea.";<br />Quotation[16] = "Comic Book Guy is based on Matt Groening.";<br />Quotation[17] = "Bart is based on Dennis the Menace.";<br />Quotation[18] = "Rainier Wolfcastle (McBain) is based on Arnie.";<br />Quotation[19] = "Marge was voted Britain's favorite mum in a Mothers' Union poll.";<br />Quotation[20] = "In 1998, the cast were paid $30,000 a show. If you want to make a bot service, use a little thing we call CGI. Use Perl, PHP, whatever--just make it so it prints ONLY a random item as the entire page's source. JavaScripts don't work for bot services.

Yeah, I mistakenly approved this post as a bot service without checking the page source. I thought it was simply spitting back a line of text. If Gavin can turn it into a standard bot service, that returns plain text or xml, then I'll allow it. Otherwise, I'm going to trash it, as it isn't actually a service.

Yer sorry about the spelling mistakes it was late at night when I made it. I'll change the obvious ones when I get time.

EDIT: Heres the elsif version of the command Bigmouth made:
Code:
if ($msg =~ /^simpsons (.*)$/) {<br />my $rand = int(rand(40));<br />my $site = get( "http://homepage.ntlworld.com/d.brittain2/random/simpsons.html" );<br /><br />if ($site =~ /Quotation\[$rand\] = "(.*?)";/i) {<br />  $simp = $1;<br />}<br />&send($self, "$simp");<br />}

or you could change it to:
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl<br /><br />print "Content-Type: text/html\n\n";<br /><br />my @quote;<br /><br />$quote[0] = "Only one character is drawn with five fingers on each hand: God.";<br />$quote[1] = "The longest Home has been seen without stubble is just seven seconds.";<br />$quote[2] = "Lisa has celebrated her eight birthday on the show twice.";<br />$quote[3] = "Pete Toenshend of The Who's cameo was actully recorded by his brother Paul.";<br />$quote[4] = "The show hints that fictional Springfield could be set in New Jersey, Missouri or Kentucky.";<br />$quote[5] = "Eric Stefani, brother of Gewn and ex-No Doubt keyboard player, left the band to become a Simpson's animator.";<br />$quote[6] = "It takes eight months to make each episode.";<br />$quote[7] = "Rev Lovejoy has three alarms in his pulpit to wake up his congregation: bird, ambulance and also disco whistle.";<br />$quote[8] = "There's a sign in the Kwik-E-Mart saying it dose not accept cheques from Chief Wiggum, Reverend Lovejoy, Homer J Simpson, H J Simpson, Homer Simpson or Homer J Fong.";<br />$quote[9] = "When Homer learns to box in the episode The Homer They Fall, he fights under the auspicious name of ASSBOX (Association of Springfield Semi-pro Boxers).";<br />$quote[10] = "The team who make Itchy And Scratchy are drawn to look like The Simpson's real-life writers.";<br />$quote[11] = "Maggie often spells out EMCSQ (or E=MC2) on her building blocks.";<br />$quote[12] = "When Maggie goes through the checkout in the opening titles, she costs .63 - the amount it costs a month to raise a baby in the US, according to statistics.";<br />$quote[13] = "Mayor Quimby is based on President John F Kennedy.";<br />$quote[14] = "Bartender Moe is based on US comedian Rich Hall.";<br />$quote[15] = "Maggie is based on Popeye's baby, Sweet Pea.";<br />$quote[16] = "Comic Book Guy is based on Matt Groening.";<br />$quote[17] = "Bart is based on Dennis the Menace.";<br />$quote[18] = "Rainier Wolfcastle (McBain) is based on Arnie.";<br />$quote[19] = "Marge was voted Britain's favorite mum in a Mothers' Union poll.";<br />$quote[20] = "In 1998, the cast were paid ,000 a show. This is instead of the .html Maybe Mojave could host this as a .pl. so everyone can you this service just like everyother service.

Or... you can just put that code into an actual bot's command itself. That's what I would do, I don't use any bot service commands because I don't want my bot to rely on a remote server to function properly.

In twenty years when Bot-Depot and many of our other sites are gone, and some people want to see what chatterbots were like 20 years ago and happens to find some online archive with old bots on some website... they're going to want the commands to work. What would it be like if you downloaded a bot with 400 commands and every one of them returned "The server could not be reached!" or returned nothing at all as a result of all the services being down?

Cer, I too really like being able to see snapshots of the past and agree it will be nice 20 years from now to see a snapshot of how an early bot worked. And certainly there are many self-contained bots that will allow for that to happen. However, as in other media, (take newspapers) and their digital equivalents (blogs), information is becoming less centralized and more digital, making snapshots much more difficult.

The concept behind services is to decentralize information and content and make it accessible to more people and bots. There is no possible way that any one bot could be coded to have all available content and services inside itself. Besides the obvious space, memory and speed issues, think of the work involved! Instead if you write bots that can grab content from services that other people are writing, you instantly have access to that info. You don't have to get the content, code it into your bot, test and hope it works. It just works automatically.

The original idea behind Botwork and its services was to give instant and automatic access to data and services to all bots, without having to recode. It was a stripped down version of web services meant to provide simple text, which is what bots need most. For now, Botwork is on hold while I work on other things, but web services and definitely here to stay and people should start taking more advantage of them.

After correcting a few spelling and grammar mistakes I found, I am hosting this service.

I'm also looking into expanding this service and maybe creating more "Simpsons's Services" using data from http://www.snpp.com
