Mirror Balancing.

Here is a idea for mirror balancing Smile

When someone adds your bot it says (on the site):
Please add x@xbot.com to your MSN Contact List!
Then, once x@xbot.com reaches eg 10 contacts it changes the site to say:
Please add x2@xbot.com to your MSN Contact List!
Then x3@xbot.com and back to x@xbot.com

And when x@xbot.com reaches eg 300 contacts it's removed from the list.

Therefore the mirror load is balanced between xbot's mirrors. Idealy if mirrors are run from seperate computers, in most cases it isnt.

You see bots like ZSBot (www.zsbot.co.uk) with 120 people on one mirror, and ten on the other. Just might help, a bit.

well me and eric were working on code(that i stupidly lost Argh!) that when you add a contact it simply finds the one that has the least mirrors, which after a while would make them all PERFECTLY balanced with only 1 either way....

Just find which mirror has the least contacts and tell them to add that in sub ContactAddingUs

Maybe it could work the other way around: a user wants to speak to a particular bot, so he or she types in his or her email address on the site and it automatically finds the mirror with the least contacts, and tells it to add that address to its contact list, that way the user doesn't need to worry about mirrors and such.

Don't forget that one of the fun things about mirrors is picking a name you like. I realize that mirrors are needed for functional reasons, but people still have fun being able to choose one for themselves.

You could have a list of mirrors, which would be called upon when the previous mirror is full.

On your site, why not just make a hash containing each passport and the number of users it has, and have the site dynamically (CGI or PHP) sort them, so that the page would look like:

Good idea. It's nice for the user to have a choice, but you can direct them towards the "best" one too.

Or a list of the top 3/5?
with the least contacts, then you have the choice and the control...
