Test it here (I know its hosted on ntl thats only becuase I know its reliable)
If you find any errors/spellings mistakes please let me know.
Thanks Gavin
Is that supposed to be a bot service, as in the LWP::Simple::get kind? Because if so, it won't work.
LWP::Simple::get would return the page source, JavaScript and all:

If you want to make a bot service, use a little thing we call CGI. Use Perl, PHP, whatever--just make it so it prints ONLY a random item as the entire page's source. JavaScripts don't work for bot services. _________________ Current Site (2008) http://www.cuvou.com/
Yeah, I mistakenly approved this post as a bot service without checking the page source. I thought it was simply spitting back a line of text. If Gavin can turn it into a standard bot service, that returns plain text or xml, then I'll allow it. Otherwise, I'm going to trash it, as it isn't actually a service.

This is instead of the .html Maybe Mojave could host this as a .pl. so everyone can you this service just like everyother service.
Or... you can just put that code into an actual bot's command itself. That's what I would do, I don't use any bot service commands because I don't want my bot to rely on a remote server to function properly.
In twenty years when Bot-Depot and many of our other sites are gone, and some people want to see what chatterbots were like 20 years ago and happens to find some online archive with old bots on some website... they're going to want the commands to work. What would it be like if you downloaded a bot with 400 commands and every one of them returned "The server could not be reached!" or returned nothing at all as a result of all the services being down? _________________ Current Site (2008) http://www.cuvou.com/
Cer, I too really like being able to see snapshots of the past and agree it will be nice 20 years from now to see a snapshot of how an early bot worked. And certainly there are many self-contained bots that will allow for that to happen. However, as in other media, (take newspapers) and their digital equivalents (blogs), information is becoming less centralized and more digital, making snapshots much more difficult.
The concept behind services is to decentralize information and content and make it accessible to more people and bots. There is no possible way that any one bot could be coded to have all available content and services inside itself. Besides the obvious space, memory and speed issues, think of the work involved! Instead if you write bots that can grab content from services that other people are writing, you instantly have access to that info. You don't have to get the content, code it into your bot, test and hope it works. It just works automatically.
The original idea behind Botwork and its services was to give instant and automatic access to data and services to all bots, without having to recode. It was a stripped down version of web services meant to provide simple text, which is what bots need most. For now, Botwork is on hold while I work on other things, but web services and definitely here to stay and people should start taking more advantage of them.
