If your last topic about this got no replies, what good will a new topic do?
Furthermore, I think Bot-Depot is pretty much dead again, even if they did get a new admin. Development of MSN.pm seems to have come to a standstill and has been this way for quite some time, with the exception of a couple (or maybe just one) people that I can't remember the usernames of who tinker around with PSM and other things with it. _________________ Current Site (2008) http://www.cuvou.com/ |

Well, more than just a new admin you must admit. A new look, SEO optimization, the Attachment mod, and a bunch of mods - all the ones everyone requested I've put in. Its frustrating to see it "dead" so if anyone knows why that is I'd love to know. _________________ Gadgets | Bot Coding | MMORPG | Ads Pixel | Random Messages | Gift Baskets | Used Electronics | Resident Evil | Hero NBC |

Well i think it is dead as more experienced members are not willing to help teach newer members about perl and how to program msn bots in it. I think that a lack of development on the MSN.pm has also led to this problem, there is still quite a lot of work that needs to be done on it, just to bring it up to scratch leave alone including the newer parts that the msn.pm hasn't ever had added to it.
The old Moto "Help Us Help you" seems to have gone out the window with the newer members asking for help and getting replies that imply that they shouldn't be asking such a stupid question. But if the Experienced members don't help them learn they can't fix their problems by themselves. I do my best to help as many people as I can but I don't know the answers to all the questions they ask, so we need the experienced members to help with their wide range of knowledge so there is some one for people to learn from. |

The problem is however that MSN Bots areant the "in thing" anymore - I expect they'll come back in full force if there given a cool down period. Even BOT2k3 is having problems now.

Yea, IRC eggdrops are very popular. The thing is that this community (or what's left) is completely MSN and Perl centric, so to move with the popularity to the IRC type of bot would mean that the current user-base is left out. Also, there are literally hundreds of IRC bot forums and this one would have no chance in competing without a dedicated userbase. _________________ ~ Josh

I take exception to whover it was that said MSN.pm is not up to "scratch". I took half a dozen incompatible, buggy version 1.Xs of MSN.pm, merged them, rewrote 75% of the core code, standardized the code and the interface, helped combine ideas and code from 3 or 4 other developers, added a bunch of functionality and removed nearly every single bug. MSN.pm 2.0 is a solid module. I personally stopped working on it at this point because I wasn't interested in all the frilly extras that MSN can do and that several people wanted. I just wanted a solid module that connects, handles server messages well, deals with buddy lists and chats perfectly. I don't need images, file transers, emoticons, etc. Others took over development of those things and never finished them or forked the code. Anyway, don't bash MSN.pm 2.0 - it worked and still works great.
As for helping, I got disillusioned with the lack of effort and learning of many of the new users of this forum. Instead of trying to figure out how something works, instead of looking at existing code to see how it works, there was a lot of "can you make this for me?", "fix this code for me". And that got old. I just yesterday actually, gave my input on some code someone wrote. They had taken the time to get it working and post it and I noticed some bugs, made some suggestions and even rewrote it how I thought it should work. Why? Because the coder showed initiative. He tried. He didn't ask anyone for anything except comments.
A dozen developers of the old forum created modules, commands, games, etc that were all quite good, and even full on bots that needed no changes. We made it as easy as possible for new developers to get stuff up and running and then tweak it and add to it.
As for bots, I personally moved away from IM bots towards web-based bots, which can have a much larger audience. With AJAX and services you can create some high quality, interactive sites that work just like IM bots but have all the extra functionality of a website. I still rev up my IM bots from time to time and expect to implement them again on some new sites I'm developing, but they aren't the end all killer app that I'm interested in anymore. They are just another useful tool to have under my belt. |

First of all: it isn't evo, it's the MSN module. It hasn't been touched in months, going on a year. Learn to live without custom emoticons, because it's nowhere near the top of anybody's to-do list unless you wanna learn Perl and do it yourself. _________________ Current Site (2008) http://www.cuvou.com/ |
