Hey there, I'm looking for suggestions on what you'd like to see on the new Bot-Depot. New forums, forum mods, etc just reply to this thread and let me know.
Hi, nice to see the forum is back. I nominate myself as moderator, as I am (...was, until spam > real posts) an active poster, know a thing or two about bots (and programming).
I don't know who this noir guy is, but you seem cool. However, you don't know what this site used to be like (unless you're someone familiar with a different alias)...I do. I came from newb to something better, and know what people looking to start in the bot world need and want.
I'm also on a different time-zone to you Americans (I live in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), so will be able to help moderate in those hours.
I have been an active poster, and think I would fill a moderator's role well. I have released three bot templates, and, if the sites become active again, may have the interest to release a further one. I believe I would be supported by any members of Bot-Depot who wish to return; however one must ask them for their opinion, naturally.
Enough about me for now
---
As for new forums, etc, I suggest a forum for "Code Help" and such like - something which people new to the bot world will take advantage of, and will frankly revive the forum.
I'm not sure if you've done something about this already, but something to block automatic posts should be done - no guest posting; email and GD-image validation.
Final point: I take care over my posts, including content, spelling and grammar (and generally keep typing until my fingers get tired, as you can see). I dnt tlk lke dis plz. Vote me : >!

Darkmonkey is true. He's helped me and many other members with a handfull of different programming problems, many (if not all) of them successful. He's also really easy to get along with.
I don't really know what else to say other than "I vote Darkmonkey!"

First I'd just like to say that I think darkmonkey will make a fine moderator so he has my support.
Second. Noir118 has been around for quite a while. I don't beleive he frequnted these boards in the past but I do know that he is dedicated to helping revive this community. He took on the financial burden of bot-depot and it is one many sites that he runs (I'll let him link to them if he would like to).
He has been a friend of my for nearly as long as bot-depot has been around and is just as excited about bots today as I was the first day I got a bot to login to AIM He has my full confidence and trust or he would not be running the site, though i'm sure he wont make any massive changes that we don't all love. His background is more on running forums than programming so hopefully he can help keep the forum running even as my interest in bots occasionaly waivers
Just wanted to provide everyone with a little background as to where this noir118 guy came from BTW Since he hasn't realy been around he wont have some of the personal issues that a few of us have (hopefully long forgoten by this point) and should be able to provide more of an outside view (as long as he agrees with me everything will be fine ). _________________ Eric256

What you need to do is think up a way to get the old members back and get new members at the same time. Maybe you could have a big hyped up release of a template etc, maybe a competition. It could be a number of things it’s just got to be something to interest all those bot lovers out there, maybe some advertisement of some kind is needed. Also I feel getting rid of the totally bots idea is good BUT I still feel you should somehow make sure the off bot topic conversations don’t get more important (in peoples eyes) to what we are here at Bot-Depot to talk about.
As for mods, darkmonkey would be a good choice he has been here a long time and has good experience with perl. _________________ MSN: gavin [at] gavinbrittain [dot] co [dot] uk

Based on all that, I'll get darkmonkey setup as a moderator tonight. I've known eric for several years now, and he and I have collaborated on many different projects. When I heard he needed help with Bot Depot I was happy to step up and help, however I defer to him (and you) on any changes made to this community. You all know it FAR better than I do, and I'm not about to change anything without conferring with you first. You'll find I'm BIG on customer service, doing what's best for the site and making people happy. _________________ Gadgets | Bot Coding | MMORPG | Ads Pixel | Random Messages | Gift Baskets | Used Electronics | Resident Evil | Hero NBC
As Gavin says, we need to advertise to the "newbies" as well as the experienced members. I'll see if I can arrange a link to be put on Mess.BE in the Programming section of their forum (advertising help for newbs in Perl, as well as interlectual discussion [I hope, hehe]), and in their "Chat Bots" section for "How to make a chatbot", etc. I might not be able to, but I know an admin or two who can twist the fingers of the very influencial Dwergs (mess.be = the msn messenger site...and of course, "how did I maked a chat bot?" is a key question on the forums )
@noir118: Any cool projects you care-to-share? And, a bit of background about you would be nice (location / occupation / interests ?)

As well as advertisement on websites like mess.be what about getting advertisement with popular bots? When people see a bot they want to know how it’s made, that’s how I found Bot-Depot anyway.
Congratulations on your moderator status Darkmonkey. I hope you help get Bot-Depot back to into the thriving community it used to be. _________________ MSN: gavin [at] gavinbrittain [dot] co [dot] uk

I agree. However, I see less and less bots - but that's mainly because the palce for advertising was Bot-Depot. The circle of life needs to be started again before bots advertising bot-depot (which were themselves advertised on bot-depot) will work.
More suggestions:
- "View new posts" thing on every page, not just index.
- ...hack the system to add a no-cache header on the View New Posts thing. This may not be the problem, but when I "View new posts" it shows a cache (I use Opera; other browsers may be less efficient at using caches) and if I force-refresh, it says "plz2not do that so fast"
- Make it so when you view a new post, it actually registers (only posting does so ATM), as far as I can tell.
- Skins <3
Hello noir118, Great to see someone has revived Bot-Depot and nice to meet you.
My name is Matthew and i am from England, I programe in PHP and Perl and have been a member for a little while now and Bot-Depot lost its status as my homepage when all this spam started however now its got some fresh blood and peoples interests are re awakening I believe I can be a more usefull help as i would expect new members as well. I offer my self as a moderator.
I am/was/is again also usually an active poster and believe i have contributed a reasonable ammount to Bot-Depot in my time here so far.
As for the new additions they are good however i would like to see some nicer colours and a more pleasent skin.

@eric: Thanks for your support ^_^
Suggestion: rss feed!<3
I'm going to go through this entire thread, sum up all the suggestions, then assign a difficulty to each and let you all know what I'll be working on next. RSS feed is an easy one though.
I've been on the Internet since 1994, worked at many failed Internet startups, and have numerous sites and projects in my mad science lab. I'm in IT and know just enough about design/SEO/coding to be dangerous. (Edit: I did the new Bot Depot logo, hope you like it.) Check my sig for the other sites I run or help out on, and it's really a pleasure meeting all of you. Viva Bot Depot! _________________ Gadgets | Bot Coding | MMORPG | Ads Pixel | Random Messages | Gift Baskets | Used Electronics | Resident Evil | Hero NBC
I'm not actualy to keen on it, I would like to see (maybe a revised edition) the old logo.
