Something I was thinking of a while ago, instead of making one A.I. that has all the knowledge in the world, you program a bunch of small A.I. programs that aren't very smart themselves but know how to interact with other programs of its kind.
Sort of like insects. Insects by themselves are dumber than rocks, but they work together and show some collective intelligence.
So you'd have lots of little programs that don't have a whole world of knowledge in themselves, but know how to find and exchange information with other programs of its kind. So you'd have whole mobs of these little programs, then you pass a message down the line explaining what their objective is, and they'd go in and find a way to reach that objective.
Like, if you put them into a virtual environment in which the same laws of physics apply, and tell them they have to get 10 blocks from the top of one huge mountain to the top of the other huge mountain, but they can't physically touch the blocks themselves, but there are other resources around... program them to find a way to reach their goal without breaking those rules.
Just something to speculate on. _________________ Current Site (2008) http://www.cuvou.com/
