Since I couldn't find any info on how the AIM chat exchanges works, I did some experimenting myself.
With the standard AIM client you can get the chat room's info, including max message lengths, etc. so I used that to compare the different exchanges.
Here's what I found, starting from 0.
Quote:
Exchange=0
Error message when joining chat:
Quote:
Invalid room name. The name you submitted may be too
long or contain invalid characters.
Exchange=1
Error message:
Quote:
Sorry, AIM could not join room "______".
Please try again later.
Exchange=2
Max Message Length = 2000
Max Visible = 2000
I'm assuming this is for plain text, since the Max Message Length tends to include HTML, where Max Visible does not
Exchange=3
Same behavior as 0.
Exchange=4
This is the default exchange that most all clients use when creating a new chat room.
Max Message Length = 2000
Max Visible = 232
Exchange=5
Max Message Length = 512
Max Visible = 512
Again, probably plain text
Exchange=7
Error message:
Quote:
Could not join chat room 'Chat About ______'
Exchange=8+
Same behavior as 4.
Exchange=16
Same behavior as 4.
Last time I checked, AIM's chats page had an exchange of 16 on every room, and it would create copies of the room if the room was full (i.e. "_____ 2" and "_____ 3" etc.). It now appears that AIM's chats page uses an exchange of 5, so I'm assuming 5 also has this function.
I haven't found anything unique with any numbers from 8 and higher.
If anybody has discovered anything else, reply here. _________________ Current Site (2008) http://www.cuvou.com/
