Alice AIML can hold conversations, it has things like "topics" and "that's" to see where the conversation's going, i.e.

AIML = Artificial Intelligence Markup Language.
It's a markup created by Dr. Rich Wallace on his award winning Alice bot. The Alice homepage is at www.alicebot.org. People have made Alice bots in lots of different languages, Perl being one of them, there's a Perl Alice program at that site (I think it's called Program V)
